연구실소개

Zooplanktology lab works on the ecology and taxonomy of marine zooplankton. We also are interested in the ecology and life history of commercially important crustaceans and the distribution of marine invertebrates. Currently, the following researches are underway or in planning.

Ecology of deep sea copepods
The bottom waters of the East Sea of Korea have never been communicated with deep waters of the Pacific and therefore, the deep-sea (bathypelagic) fauna of the Pacific has never invaded into the water.
- We want to see if there is a seasonality of copepod abundance and life cycle because the depths are beyond the migration ranges of zooplankton and the environments are homogeneous.
- How copepods are used by deep sea predators

Ecology of zooplankton near Pusan Harbor
Pusan Harbor is located near the pathway of warm Tsushima current, a branch of the Kuroshio Current. This warm current delivers many warm water species into Korean waters. Some of the species has become residents in Korean waters. This is a key study of climate change in the marine ecosystem. We reevaluate pelagic ecosystem near Pusan harbor.
- We want to see if there is a seasonality of abundance and life cycle in dominant species such as Oithona spp..
- Also, investigate the distribution pattern of warm water species and local species

Taylor column effects off the area near small islands in the East Sea of Korea/Japan Sea
- How regional populations near the island are retained and sustained
- Actual range of Taylor effects near the islands
- How Taylor column works on the biodiversity of the ecosystem

Illustration book for meroplankton in the Korean waters
There are two types of zooplankton: Meroplankton and Holoplankton. Meroplankton spend a portion of their life as plankton while holoplankton spend their entire life as plankton in invertebrates.
Meroplankton are more diverse in morphology contributing people difficult to identify them. We are going to make an illustration book for meroplankton of marine invertebrates.
